To enhance the property’s outdoor design so residents and their guests feel welcomed.
Rook Apartments is more than just an apartment building. It’s quickly becoming a social hub that reflects the bustling redevelopment of downtown Tacoma.
Views of Mount Rainier surround Rook Apartments. But what you see when you look at and inside this building is just as magical.
Inspired by local craft breweries and the history of Tacoma’s timber industry, the development’s jaw-dropping design places reclaimed wood and modern industrial elements side-by-side.
Custom Solution:
Custom Bottomless Retaining Wall Planters were manufactured to be installed between the sidewalk and street outside of the apartments and intended to hold trees and ornamental grasses.
The project, which incorporated 13 rectangular custom metal planters in matte black, had the following customization needs:
Unique anchoring solutions. When anchoring planters, you’re typically working with a concrete slab. However, the design of this project needed the planters to be anchored into compacted gravel. Our team found solutions that involved extra bracing for the planters to ensure stability.
A sidewalk with varying grades. For three of the planters, the grade of the sidewalk was approximately a foot lower than the grade of the curb. Our team considered a few options for addressing this issue and determined that the most cost-effective solution would be to bury one side of each planter deeper than the other.
Quick turnaround times. The client had a tight timeline for two reasons. First, they needed a solution that complied with city permit requirements, including the planters being manufactured within certain dimensions and ready to be anchored into compacted gravel. Second, the planters needed to be installed in time to not delay the building's occupancy permit.
Project Success:
The addition of large planters with trees beautifully alludes to what guests will see inside — stunning design that combines the rustic feel of nature with a sophisticated and sleek industrial look.
