Planters Used as Barriers or Bollards

Property owners want to protect their infrastructure and the people who use the space. Whether it’s local traffic or a distracted driver that you’re concerned about, barriers or bollards can help. But when you install barriers or bollards, they should not get in the way of the aesthetics for people using the space.

Luckily, when choosing a barrier to protect the property, you’re not limited to unwelcoming blockade structures. Instead of disrupting a beautiful design plan with walls of concrete, you can add visual cues to alert drivers to off-limit areas with a beautiful barrier or bollard planter.

Planters can serve as decorative barriers for parks, restaurants, municipal buildings, and commercial or retail businesses by separating walkways from busy streets and parking areas.

Keep reading to learn more about bollard planters, use cases, and information to help you select the right materials and products for your next project.

What Are Bollard Planters?

Whether you call them bollard planters, barrier planters, or security bollards, these structures help guide traffic and serve as a barrier for vehicles. For buildings close to traffic, bollards protect vehicles, pedestrians, and infrastructure.

Bollard planters help drivers perceive distance and space more accurately. They can be custom designed to be visible to drivers without obstructing sightlines. Plus, when bollard planters are installed in a series, they often create the illusion of a vertical speed bump. As a result, drivers notice them popping in and out of their sightline, which tends to encourage drivers to slow down.

While bollard planters serve a functional purpose, they can also be quite decorative.

Barrier Planters: Use Cases & Purposes

You can install a traffic-stopping planter in just about any type of location, including:

  • Banks and professional complexes

  • Airports, bus stops, and train stations

  • Conference centers and sports arenas

  • Government buildings and police stations

  • Storefronts, retail parks, grocery stores, and strip malls

  • Schools, parks, and playgrounds

  • Roundabouts, medians, and traffic circles

Of course, barrier and bollard planters are effective solutions for hardening a perimeter to reinforce pedestrian safety, and — at the same time — enhancing the streetscape.

Material Types for Bollard Planters

You’ll want an especially strong material for your bollard planter. We suggest the following materials:

  • Powder-coated aluminum. These modern, customizable, marine-grade aluminum planters look good while withstanding all types of weather conditions. At PureModern, we use marine-grade aluminum because it’s specially alloyed for strength.

  • COR-TEN steel. Ideal for outdoor spaces, these edgy-looking weathering steel metal planters are naturally water and frost resistant. And because COR-TEN steel is specially alloyed, it’s stronger than mild steel.

What Standards Are Used for Barrier Planters?

Barrier planters can be rated according to regulated test standards. These tests measure things like penetration distance of a vehicle beyond a regulated barrier, size, weight, speed, and angle of impact.

Please note that PureModern has not tested for any of these specifications. Clients use our planters to serve more as a visual cue to alert drivers of off-limits areas and encourage safe driving habits.

However, our planters aren’t easily moved, as you can see in the image below. This metal planter held its ground even when a reckless driver crashed into it.
