Hospitals, restaurants, and shopping centers invest in their property's aesthetic appeal to attract customers. Elevating the overall look and feel of a commercial space results in repeat and happy customers.

Research proves that adding elements of greenery is a smart investment for commercial property owners. One study found that the average shopper spends 9-12% more — on both goods and services — when surrounded by high-quality greenery.

Business owners and managers understand that clients are more likely to return if they have a satisfying experience. Studies show that when people connect with natural settings, they report lower levels of stress and higher levels of eye-tracking, attraction, and emotional involvement.

To ensure your customers are satisfied, add greenery in the most cost-effective way by incorporating our commercial wholesale planters.

What Does Wholesale Mean?

Wholesale means that a business sells a large number of goods to other companies who, in turn, sell to an end-user or use the product for their client’s project.

The key to wholesale is the quantity purchased and who is buying the product —the higher quantity of a product purchased, the bigger the discount.

When our clients (landscape architects, architects, interior designers, and plantscapers) purchase wholesale planters, they receive an automatic trade discount of 20% off our retail-priced products. There is an additional discount of up to 40% if a larger quantity is purchased.

What Are Commercial Planters?

Commercial Planters are well suited for commercial environments since they can withstand the bumps and knocks common in high-traffic spots, such as malls, hospitals, hotel lobbies, or rooftop restaurants. Sometimes called contract-grade planters, commercial planters tend to be lifetime products that require little maintenance.

Commercial planters vary based on four characteristics: how they're made, the time it takes to make them, the quality of material, and how difficult it is to source that material. How they’re used or where they’ll be located does not play a part in whether a planter is considered commercial.

For example, our Modern Elite Aluminum Planters are durable, and their finish will last because we use marine-grade aluminum. This grade of aluminum is typically used in shipbuilding and aircraft fabrication. The aluminum is powder-coated with a VOC-free architectural grade powder that is heated and cured, and the end result is a durable coating.

The combination of the marine-grade aluminum and the architectural-grade powder creates the durability that is required in a commercial product. Read more about commercial-grade planter materials here

The Importance of Greenery in Commercial Spaces

Eco-friendly practices continue to grow in popularity — and with good reason. By enhancing commercial areas with plants, organizations share their commitment to environmental care and accountability.

Businesses focus on enhancing results. Today’s consumers are constantly seeking ways to enhance the quality of their lives. Commercial planters are an innovative and economical way to deliver exactly what clients want.

The importance of adding greenery to commercial spaces has increased as society places more and more value on nature and natural elements. This connection to nature is called biophilia. And when combined with modern design, biophilic design delivers countless benefits for businesses, employees, and customers:

  • Beyond aesthetics, biophilic design supports a wide range of positive physiological impacts, including cognitive function, psychological well-being, and even physical health.

  • Studies show that when customers and employees connect with natural settings, they report tendencies linked to higher engagement, including lower levels of stress and higher levels of eye-tracking, attraction, and emotional involvement.

  • A study published in the Journal of Forestry found that the average shopper spends 9-12% more — on both goods and services — when surrounded by high-quality greenery.

10 Tips for Purchasing Wholesale Commercial Planters

When working with a new client or on a new project, a tool chest of go-to ideas can be your best friend.

Below are 10 best practices we’ve uncovered during our 17 years in the planter business:

  1. Ask questions. Your idea may seem unachievable, but inquire first before casting the idea aside.

  2. Find a manufacturer who can value engineer the process for you. Your idea may seem too expensive. We may have a way to decrease the expense.

  3. Know you can still move your project forward even if the plan is not nailed down. You may not know exactly what you want, but you have an idea and just need to flesh it out a bit more. At PureModern, we help our clients sort out the details every day.

  4. Order samples. You’ll be able to see and feel the color and texture. Plus, placing the samples in the right lighting will allow you to determine, with confidence, the correct option for you and your client. Click here to order samples today.

  5. Think about the long-term need, not just the immediate need.

  6. Ask the manufacturer about their procurement process. During our time in business, we have developed the Four-Step Project Process. This process is a proven way to successfully execute a project on time and on budget.

  7. Clearly communicate your expectations for completion. The drawing, fabricating, and shipping processes may take longer than you expected.

  8. Work with a manufacturer who is flexible. At PureModern, we are happy to redo the quote as many times as you need. We are also happy to provide ideas for inspiration.

  9. Notice how timely the manufacturer’s communication is from the very start. At PureModern, we’ll provide a budget estimate in 24-48 hours, depending on the complexity of the project.

  10. Take time to consider which material is best for your project. The material you select will impact available options, manufacturing time, and budget.

Commercial vs. Retail Planters

When it comes to deciding between buying commercial or retail planters, the critical consideration is whether you want a product that may need replacing in a few years or a product that will last for years to come.

Commercial business owners can buy wholesale planters that are not necessarily commercial-grade planters. These retail planters will have a lower upfront cost, but can often cost more in the long run. This is because retail planters can become brittle, the color fades faster, and they can simply fall apart if left outside in the elements.

To make an informed purchasing decision, be sure to understand the difference between a commercial planter and a retail planter.

Commercial planters are specifically designed for businesses and public use facilities.

Often found in local hardware stores, retail planters are smaller and typically designed to be used in residential settings.

Retail planters are significantly less expensive. However, for design plans for commercial settings, taking the less expensive option can cost more in the long run.

While some office spaces, parks, or stores may use retail planters, we recommend against doing so. Commercial planters are significantly more durable, making them the best choice when looking for a lifetime product.

When comparing the two, you’ll find that commercial planters are:

  • More substantial in size

  • Fabricated with sturdier materials

  • Built to last longer and resist chips, cracks, and other failures

  • Strong enough to function as decorative barriers for parks, restaurants, municipal buildings, and commercial or retail businesses by separating walkways from busy streets and parking areas

Outdoor vs. Indoor Commercial Planters

Most commercial planters are suitable for either indoor or outdoor applications. Commercial planters are made to withstand high-traffic areas, the freeze and thaws of the north, and increased moisture and rain of the south.

Characteristics to look for in an outdoor planter

  • UV protective paint to sustain the original color as much as possible

  • Made of a material to withstand freeze and thaw as well as high temperatures

  • Material to withstand constant moisture contact

  • An appropriate watering solution such as an Ollie Plant Sipper

Characteristics to look for in an indoor planter

  • Watertight so to not damage the floor

  • Hardy material and finish to sustain the bumps and knocks in a commercial setting

  • An appropriate watering solution such as an Ollie Plant Sipper

Commercial Planter Shapes

Every designed space needs a planter shape that fits the vision. Choose from shapes including round, rectangle, square, and tapered.

When navigating our website, find exactly what you’re looking for by using the search function and filters on the left side of our collection pages.

Round Planters

The round shape is a geometric shape but with an organic feel. This planter shape can lend itself to even more of a modern look with straight sides, such as a cylinder or tapered sides for a traditional feel.

Examples of round planters:

Rectangle Planters

The rectangular shape can be used as a divider planter to separate two distinct spaces or pushed against a wall to add greenery to an otherwise bland space.

Examples of rectangular planters:

Square Planters

This shape is one of our most versatile shapes because it can stand alone as a statement piece or be positioned in a long line alongside a driveway or entrance.

Examples of square planters:

Uniquely Shaped Planters

Planters that don’t fit in any of the above categories have a shape suitable for a very distinct feel. These shapes fit a specific design where the planter is just as important as the plants in them.

Examples of uniquely shaped planters:

Wholesale Planter Sizes

Most wholesale planters made of fiberglass and metal can be manufactured in many different sizes. We can manufacture planters for the top of desks, platforms, and even ornamental trees.

Small Tabletop Planter

For a tabletop application, the PurePots Klass Round Tabletop Fiberglass Planter - 4328RTT is a solution with a smaller planting space of 12 inches diameter and a height of 7 inches. This fiberglass planter is offered in 2 different sizes from 7 inches to 8 inches height.

Medium Sized Planter Suitable to Grace an Entrance

A commercial planter that would look good next to a restaurant or hotel entryway is the Modern Elite Tapered Planter. This wholesale planter is fabricated from powder-coated aluminum and can be made to suit your design. One size we offer of this product is a medium-sized planter at the height of 32 inches, a tapered base of 12 x 12 inches, and a top opening of 16 x 16 inches. This planter is offered in 8 stock colors but can be powder-coated in a color of your choice.

Large Planter Big Enough For an Ornamental Tree

The best size of planter to fit a small tree all depends on how big the root ball of the tree is, how tall the tree will be when full grown, and the optimal tree root growth space. To find the shape and size that fits your design, we suggest that you consider the Modern Elite Cube Planter. This wholesale planter can be manufactured to fit your chosen tree and powder-coated in a color that fits perfectly with your branding. Want it in blue? We gotcha!

Tall Planter That Makes a Statement

Wholesale planters are a great way to make a quick change to a space, and a few of them could be used as added interest even without greenery. A tall planter that we would suggest to act as eye candy would be the Rico Square Tall Tower Fiberglass Planter. At 42 to 60 inches tall and a diameter of 8 to 16 inches, this planter will look good in its final placement while you look for a suitable plant.

Wholesale Planter Materials

The material a planter is made of will determine how long it will last in its specified location. Below are a few common materials found in wholesale planters, along with the benefits of each.

Powder-Coated Marine Grade Aluminum

PureModern commercial-grade powder-coated aluminum planters are perfect for a project that requires low-maintenance and lightweight metal planters that can withstand extreme weather conditions as well as high-traffic areas. This planter material can be made in most shapes and sizes to fit your design.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass will fit the project's material needs if you need a lightweight, low-maintenance, and budget-friendly wholesale planter. Fiberglass can be painted in almost any color.

Stainless Steel

It has an ultra-modern feel, but this material can be very costly, so we recommend going with an aluminum planter that is powder-coated to look like stainless steel.

Weathering Steel

COR-TEN weathering steel will fit your needs if you want a modern industrial design, don’t mind waiting for the material to patina, and the planter's surrounding area can tolerate metal bleeding.

Galvanized Steel

This is not a commonly used planter material, but one can use it to achieve an industrial look. It is often riveted together with folded corners. The material should not be used in coastal or saltwater environments.

Copper

This look can be achieved either with an infused fiberglass planter or powder-coating aluminum in a matching color.

Concrete

While concrete can be a great product, we don’t usually recommend it, as aluminum and fiberglass are much easier to procure because of the shorter lead time and lighter weight.

Trends in commercial Planter Design

Below are several examples of PureModern planters contributing to the evolving landscape of commercial design.

Utilize Planters to Accentuate Your Business Entryway

The benefits of entryway planters range from enhancing curb appeal to influencing consumer behavior.

Border Your Property's Walkways with Planters

Commercial planters that border walkways or sidewalks are a cost-effective solution that elevates any commercial space.

Sidewalk planters can be installed as standalone features or in coordination with other streetscape features like trees or bioretention planters. When selected strategically and maintained properly, sidewalk planters can deliver the same benefits you would expect from in-ground plantings.

Commercial planters serve a variety of functions and come in many sizes and shapes to support everything from small trees to shrubs, grasses, and perennials.

Use Planters to Enhance Your Parking Areas

Installing planters in your parking areas can accomplish aesthetic design goals while also protecting infrastructure and the people using the parking area.

Beautiful barrier planters or bollard planters can add visual cues to alert drivers to off-limit areas.

Utilize Planters to Establish Borders and Separators

Commercial planters used outdoors can serve asdecorative bordersfor parks, municipal buildings, and businesses by separating walkways from busy streets and parking areas.

In a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, commercial planters can be used to carve outinviting and functional seating arrangements in hotel, office, a college campus or restaurant.

When designers need solutions to block out certain unsightly elements, commercial planters can accomplish that goal.
